Download Lady Gaga – Telephone

just messing with photoshop… :) what do you think?

The two representations of Newcastle that I am going to look at, are both sets of photographs taken by art students, who had been given the task to look at an aspect of Newcastle then use the images to create fine art that represents this. Selection #1 looks at how Newcastle is very structurally sound, I was interested in the strength, safety and unity that came from the bridges, juxtaposed with the movement, fluidity and excitement that Newcastle offer. Selection #2 looks at the one of the cultural aspects of the city, China Town on Stowell Street, My sister was interested in the bright colours, the magical building and the almost ‘fantasy’ atmosphere that comes with the chinese culture.

Selection #1 are photographs taken during twilight around Newcastle, they are a set of 3 photos, all taken within 10 paces of one another. I took them Christmas 08 and I was looking at the bridges, in particular the structural aspects of the bridges and building. I seek refuge in Newcastle, I feel that it protects me; the bold structure, the interlocking architecture and the busy feel to the city, provides feeling of safety. I feel I belong. I was interested in capturing the boldness, and structure of the bridges, especially the Tyne Bridge, and also trying to capture the fluidity and movement, or change of the area. A city that is always awake, permanently breathing and constantly evolving. The long aperture time not only meant I could capture the movement and use it in the development of my art, but it was like I was ‘soaking’ in Newcastle, the camera was being exposed to Newcastle, spending time sitting absorbing the area, which is something I personally do a lot of the time.

Selection #2 similarly photographs taken with the intention to represent the City, and develop them into a form of fine art, Bethany was look at the difference cultural aspects of the area. Looking at the images, there is a definite interest with the bright colors and concentrating on the architecture. It appears that she sees Newcastle like a magical retreat. Location wise Stowell Street is almost hidden amongst the larger tourist attraction, you have to search for it. Almost like going on an adventure. She captured this with the images, showing the definite difference, with the entrance bridge to china town, with the football stadium behind it. She captured the magical, fantasy of china town using the perspective and the colours. As an artist she managed to represent the area in a very unusual way, capturing both the cultures. She represents it like it is a treasure chest of culture.

In conclusion, I feel strongly that my images – selection #1, more effectively portray Newcastle, and captures the wholeness of the area. I feel Newcastle IS the bridges, IS the unity with Gateshead, IS the beautiful old architecture, and not so much the small areas of diversity. I feel the bridges are more central, more acknowledged, and more meaningful. Selection #2 creates  more magical feel, however it doesn’t truly represent Newcastle, it shows one of the smallest parts of Newcastle, giving the wrong impression of the area. Overall everyone has there own personal take on the city, strongly depending on their background, upbringing, their ideas and feelings towards the area, no representation will ever be ‘wrong’, and the interpretation of them will never be the same from person to person. My feelings towards Newcastle is that it is a safe place for me to exist, sitting on/under/near the Tyne Bridge makes me feel secure…
